Skiers in the north and north east were unable to celebrate the New Year on the slopes yesterday due to wet, mild and windy conditions.
These reduced snow cover and made it too dangerous to operate lifts.
Snow sports were closed at CairnGorm Mountain, Nevis Range, Glencoe Mountain Resort, the Lecht and Glenshee.
Jeanette Jansson, who is general manager at CairnGorm Mountain, near Aviemore, said they had been unable to open due to wind speeds of more than 75mph on the higher slopes.
She added that they had recorded temperatures of up to 15C yesterday morning and had lost some of the snow on the lower slopes.
She said a decision about whether they could offer skiing today would be taken in the morning.
Andy Meldrum, who is managing director of Glencoe Mountain Resort in Lochaber, said they were also unable to open yesterday because winds were forecast to be as strong as 100mph.
He said: “We’ve lost a lot of the snow we had and the forecast for Friday is for a full on blizzard, with wind speeds of 60-80mph so we will not be opening.
“However, it’s looking much more settled for the weekend, with fresh snow falling overnight and through Friday.
“We expect to have some decent skiing available again on Saturday.”
But he stressed that a decision would be taken nearer the time.
And a spokeswoman for Nevis Range, near Fort William, said the resort was closed yesterday due to high winds and the forecast was similar for today.
She said: “The winds have been so high that we were unable to put anyone onto the hill to look at conditions, so we will have to assess the situation on Friday morning.”
A spokesman for the Lecht at Strathdon yesterday said: “We have been unable to offer snow sports as we only have small patches at the moment.”
And a spokeswoman for Glenshee Ski Centre at Cairnwell said people had been sledging on wet patches of snow.
She thought it unlikely that there would be any skiing today.
