More than 100 darts players turned out for a competition held in memory of a darts star who died in a car crash in the Highlands almost a year ago.
And there was not a dry eye in the house as an emotional tribute to Bryan Whyte was read out before the start of play at the 2015 Buckie Darts Open.
The 34-year-old father-of-four had been on the verge of his Scotland debut, after being called up to the national team, when he was killed in the accident on the A82 Fort William to Inverness road in February of last year.
Mr Whyte, who lived in Spean Bridge, had also been due to marry his fiancee, Dawn Gordon, in April.
Tributes to the popular darts player came flooding in after his death and the Buckie event was played in his honour on Saturday.
Mr Whyte won the title in 2013 and 2104 and the winner of this year’s competition at the Fisherman’s Hall was to take the trophy home for keeps.
His brother, James Whyte, who travelled from Fort William to take part in the event, had prepared a few words in memory of his brother that he had intended to read out before the event.
However, he found this too difficult as he became a bit emotional, so Craigenroan darter and draw planner John Wilson did the honours and everyone present was moved to tears.
The announcement that all proceeds from the raffle would go to Bryan Whyte’s family also brought applause from the players, who raised a glass to him prior to the competition getting underway.
A total of 102 players lined up to the oche to pay their respects to him, but also to battle it out for the £500 top prize and the title was won by George Main of Inverness, who was a friend of Mr Whyte.
Mr Main said: “It was a very emotional day knowing that it was for the Bryan Whyte Trophy and I am so chuffed at winning and following in the footsteps of such a fantastic person and player and who will always be in our thoughts.”
Organiser Johnny Dunbar said: “We would like to thank everyone who came along and took part in this great day of darts and were delighted to get over 100 players.”
