Mr Maclennan of Newton Street, who stood on an independent ticket, was the only person to put his name forward for election on time. He previously worked for Western Isles Council and is a former secretary of Unison local government Western Isles branch. Mr Maclennan recently launched a competition to guess the start date of the delayed new £42million Stornoway ferry. The winner gets a £100 shopping voucher while proceeds go to the Stornoway Fishermen’s Mission. The Ness/ Westside seat became vacant following death of Councillor Kenneth Murray who died on December 23 aged 64 years.
