A community trailer that has been at the heart of hundreds of community events in Oban has been destroyed by vandals.

McQueen Brothers’ community trailer has been used at events as a hub for co-rodinating activity.

It has even played host to visitors from all over the world as they arrive into the town by cruise ships.

The charitable trust that owns the vehicle said it had been destroyed overnight and would now be unable for community use.

‘Broken into and vandalised’

The trailer was purchased for the community by MacQueen Bros after a community caravan was taken out of commission around seven years ago.

The trailer was at the heart of a number of community events as it was able to protect event organisers from all weathers.

Inside the trailer was a TV and provided a place for people to gather to co-ordiate events.

Robin MacQueen, of MacQueen Brothers Charitable Trust, said: “We are sad to report that our events trailer that we give out free of charge to local charities and community groups has been broken it to and vandalised.

“The television and DVD player have been smashed, the PA system burnt and the cupboards ransacked.

Community asset ‘wrecked’

“There is also a strong smell of cannabis so the culprits have had a good time whilst they have wrecked this asset to the community.

He continued: “The trailer shall be unavailable for bookings until we can clean and air the trailer and fund raise to replace equipment.”

Mr MacQueen confirmed that with support from the local BIB company no further donations were required.

He continued: “This all occurred while the trailer was parked at Mossfield Stadium so if anybody has seen any suspicious characters within that area please contact us, or the Oban police.”

Andrew Spence, BID for Oban‘s chief executive, said: ” BID4Oban were saddened to see the social media reports regarding the MacQueen Brothers Charitable Trust trailer.

“This is mindless vandalism of a valuable community asset that has been used for numerous events and purposes.

“BID4Oban have used the trailer along with the Port of Oban Cruise Group to welcome visitors from across the globe and it has created a great first impression for the town.

He said: “BID4Oban will be donating £300 to the trust to aid with its cleaning and repairs.”

A police spokesman said : “We are carrying out inquiries after a trailer was vandalised and reported to police on Tuesday, November 22. Anyone who knows who was responsible should contact police on 101, quoting 1974 of November 22.”
