HMS Sutherland has tested her brand new kit in open waters for the first time after its refit.
Last night, crews trialled the torpedoes which fire into the water from the side of the ship.
In the video, the Sting Ray can be seen thrusting out of the tube using high pressure air while a small parachute is deployed to slow its decent into the ocean.
The real thing would normally carry a 1,000lb explosive charge and be powered through the water at more than 50mph.
Nathan Bainbridge, said it was great to see the team’s hard work pay off.
He added: “We’ve been preparing for this trial for a long time and to have the torpedo launch like that was fantastic.
“It makes it all worthwhile!”
HMS Sutherland will continue through her sea trials, ensuring all her equipment is at peak operating performance prior to re-joining the rest of the fleet.
