The family of a man who died following a disturbance in Alness have described him as “one of the best”.

Father-of-two Scott Mitchell died at an address in Milnafua in the early hours of Saturday.

A 15-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with his murder.

Today Mr Mitchell’s family spoke of their “devastation” at their “senseless loss”.

In a statement, they said: “Scott was a family man, father of two, son, uncle and great uncle to his family and loved by all that knew him.

“The family are devastated at the senseless loss of Scott. Scott loved the outdoors and was a keen runner, golfer and cyclist who will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”

‘Highly regarded and inspirational colleague’

Mr Mitchell was a network assessor and surveyor for Openreach for 20 years – which took him across the country, letting him enjoy his passion for the outdoors as he worked.

A spokesman said: “He was a highly-regarded and inspirational colleague, known for his energetic positivity and great sense of humour.

“He was always ready to help out anyone and share his experiences to raise standards.

“He loved the outdoors and his job took him to some of Scotland’s most scenic places, where he often shared his photos of the wildlife and landscapes he came across.

“Our thoughts are with Scott’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones at this very difficult time. We’re offering our people any help and support they need as they come to terms with his loss.”

Locals spoke of their shock at the tragedy, and paid tribute to Mr Mitchell – with friends describing his “big smile and even bigger heart”.

‘A very helpful man’

The 48-year-old lived in nearby Milton, but was a well-known face in Invergordon town centre.

Kinga Jaroszek, manager of Nickel and Dime, regularly saw Mr Mitchell and his partner in the shop or at social gatherings.

Describing him as a “very helpful man”, she said he helped her install her BT connection eight years ago, which she thanked him for by baking him a traditional Polish cake.

Mrs Jaroszek and her husband ran in similar circles to Mr Mitchell and says she would often see him at parties, recalling one time h attempted to speak Polish with her mother Ula.

Extending her sympathies to Mr Mitchell’s loved ones, she added: “I can’t say anything bad about him, he was a very considerate man.

“I still don’t believe it happened, I think about it when I walk home at night. He will be sadly missed.”

Scott Mitchell remembered for his ‘endless banter’

Tony Hassan, owner of Buchanan’s Newsagents in Invergordon, also saw Mr Mitchell around town regularly and said he was “a very nice guy”.

He described him as “very athletic” and could be seen traversing the trails around the Fyrish Monument nearby.

Tributes also poured in online since the news broke.

Julie Douglas wrote: “My friend, my comrade, I’ll miss you Scott, I can’t explain how broken I am to hear you’re gone. Thank you for the laughs, the knowledge and the guidance. Forever alive in my memories and my heart. Rest easy fella.”

Isobel Simpson said she was “heartbroken”, posting: “Thinking of the family of one of life’s gems. My school friend buddy. We shared many a laugh and had such a good sense of humour… Miss you Scottie boy.”

Graeme Robb commented: “Devastating news, an absolute gentleman with endless banter that could light up any room. Will miss you, pal.”

Mandy Rodger remembered Mr Mitchell as someone who “never failed to put a smile on people’s faces”.

She said: “Was so devastated hearing this. You were such a gentleman Scott. You never failed to put a smile on people’s faces and give everyone a laugh. We’ve had many laughs over the years. Will definitely miss your banter.”

Angela Nicolson added: “Absolutely tragic news. Scott was an absolute gentleman and always had a smile on his face. Devastating for all his family. Sending my love to you all.”

Jacqueline Noble wrote: “Devastating news. Couldn’t have met a nicer quiet guy and a genuinely lovely family. Thinking of you all.”

A 15-year-old boy appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court on Monday accused of murder.

He made no plea or declaration during the brief hearing. He was released on bail and the case continued for further examination.
