A 56-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after falling while climbing a popular Highland mountain and subsequently taking ill.
The accident happened on the trail up Liathach mountain in Glen Torridon after the alarm was raised by a member of the group at about 4pm yesterday.
A Bristow Rescue 951 helicopter stationed at Inverness Costguard centre went to the scene and airlifted the casualty to Raigmore Hospital in the Highland capital.
Arjan Hendriks, Torridon and Kinlochewe Mountain Rescue team leader, said that the Coastguard team dealt with the casualty alone did not request their help. He said: “The party were staying at the youth hostel in Torridon.
“The man must have slipped down the slope a fair distance as we believe that he had a broken leg and head injuries.”
