Fort William’s oldest primary school will close its doors for the last time today as pupils prepare to move to a new site.
Youngsters at Fort William Primary School celebrated the end of an era at the 140-year-old school with a special assembly yesterday.
They were presented with trophies and shields on their last day by former staff members, in a ceremony to celebrated curricular achievement and sporting success.
The school is merging with Upper Achintore Primary School in a new 11-classroom building at Lundavra Road, due to open in October.
Pupils will be taught at Upper Achintore until the new school is open,
It is one of three new schools under construction by Highland Council.
Works are also ongoing on a dedicated Gaelic primary school at Ardgour Road in Caol.
A third project involves a joint campus to replace Caol Primary School and another to combine the existing Fort William and Lochyside Roman Catholic Primary Schools.
Yesterday at Fort William Primary School, a booklet of happy memories compiled by children, staff and former staff members, was presented during the assembly.
A book of old photographs dating back to 1904 was also compiled earlier in the year and several copies of this were sold to the public.
Fort William Primary School teacher Alison Stephen said: “During the assembly some children got to take home cups and shields that have been given out over the years. For example, one boy in primary five, Finn Forsyth, got the most improved rounders player. The shield he took home was dedicated by a former member of staff, and it is quite a prestigious shield to get as our school has a history of playing rounders, and it normally goes to the winning house team.
“The children have been upbeat recently but there’s always been a hinge of concern about the doors being closed for good.”
