Most of a sports club which was consumed by a fierce fire last night has been saved, thanks to the quick actions of firefighters.
Crews had to be pulled back from the burning building at Claggan Park in Fort William.
The fire started in the changing rooms at around 8.40pm and was well alight by the time crews – from Fort William, Kinlochleven and Fort Augustus – arrived.
Flames had also broken through the roof of the building, which is home to Fort William FC.
Firefighters were on scene until 12.20am this morning.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Group Manager, Pat McElhinney, said: “It was evident that we had a very large, well-developed fire when we arrived. We secured water, set up cordons and proceeded to fight the fire the from the outside for crew safety, as there was a danger of backdraught explosions.
“The roof structure of the building also became very unstable which hampered progress but all crews worked extremely hard to save this vital community building.
“Although the roof was damaged and some rooms have been affected by the fire, we have managed to save the majority of the building and that is down to the speed of operational crews to attack and fight the fire in a safe, ordered and systematic way.
“I would like to thank all the crews who attended for their efforts and professionalism throughout the incident. Thankfully no one was harmed as a result of the fire.”
The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations are ongoing by both Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland.
