A former wastewater treatment works will be given a new lease of life as a beautiful park if new plans for a Highland village are approved.
The water reservoir at the Aviemore plant will become a boating pond in the summer and an ice rink in the winter.
And there will be a mini golf course created on the surrounding land.
The plans will be discussed by the Cairngorms National Park Authority at their meeting at Boat of Garten tomorrow.
Park officials have recommended that the plans be granted detailed planning permission.
The site is on Dalfaber Road, close to the centre of Aviemore – and can be reached by the underpass at the Dell of Spey.
It is also close to land for the Aviemore community park.
The waste water treatment plant closed several years ago and was replaced by a new site on the outskirts of the village.
No one from EnviroPlan Consulting Ltd was available for comment yesterday.
However according to planning documents, the near 65ft diameter tank will be filled in and used as a pond for “bumper boats”.
Then in the winter, it will be transformed into an ice rink using sheets of plastic “ice”.
The former pumphouse will be converted into a ticket office, storage, toilets and snack bar.
Areas will also be provided for picnics, bike storage and bird feeding.
The facility will be open from 9am-9pm every day.
CNPA planning officer Katherine Donnachie said: “The development is generally welcomed as positive reuse of a derelict site, is of a good standard of design, and is now providing additional landscape and biodiversity provision.”
Aviemore Community Council has also given the scheme its support.
Chairman John Grierson said: “Aviemore and Vicinity Community Council support the application and see it a good opportunity to make use of a piece of derelict land which has become a dumping ground for litter and is an eyesore.”
However he added that the group felt there should be parking provided at or near the development.
He also called for a road safety plan because the development is on a single track, un-adopted road.
