The entire campsite at Tiree Music Festival has been evacuated after revellers’ tents were blown away by strong winds.
Festival goers were being put up at the island’s airport, business centres, schools, churches and in people’s houses last night.
The situation is to be reassessed in the morning when better weather is forecast.
Oban’s Tesco store donated all of the tents it had in stock after hearing about the plight of campers yesterday.
They are due to be sent to Tiree on the first boat this morning.
Last night’s entertainment had already been streamlined with the opening of two of the larger tents postponed until today when the high winds are expected to abate.
However, at 6.30pm, as conditions worsened, organisers took the decision to move everyone out of the site.
A statement on the festival’s website said: “Due to adverse weather conditions and for the overall comfort of our festival goers, we have decided to evacuate the site for the evening.
“We have no major concerns or issues but have taken this measure as a caution, we will re-evaluate this situation in the morning when weather forecasters have predicted better weather.
“Working closely with Argyll and Bute Council, our in house health and safety team and emergency services, coaches and buses have been arranged for attendees and we have provided accommodation for campers in local schools, business centres and churches.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful people of Tiree, who have been tremendous in opening their doors to our visitors. We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for better weather and an even better festival day.”
All 1,700 tickets to this year’s event sold out within five hours of going on sale. The Fratellis are due to headline on Sunday night. Other acts include Funbox, We Banjo 3, Skerryvore, Manran, Gentlemen of Few, Skipinnish, The Chaplins, Cherry Grove, Trail West, Gunna Sound, Dun Mor, The Lowground and Chunks.
Famed for its laid back atmosphere, Tiree Music Festival attracts a diverse audience and is known as one of the most family-friendly in the UK.
Due to demand, it took place over three days for the first time in 2014 and expanded its capacity to 1,600 – more than three times the population of the island. This year an extra 100 tickets were added.
