Ambitious plans to transform an abandoned wastewater treatment works into a boating pond and miniature golf course are in the running for a development award.
Approval was given to the overhaul of a former industrial site in the centre of Aviemore by the Cairngorm National Park Authority this month.
Now developer John Smith has entered his plan into the National Brownfield Competition to drum up nationwide interest in the project.
Mr Smith, a consultant town planner from Langbank in Renfrewshire, spotted a gap in the market as a regular visitor to the village as a tourist.
And he revealed that he hopes that the new park could be up and running as soon as Spring next year.
He said: “I am currently appraising and meeting the planning conditions but it is my intention, subject to finalising funding, that this project commence for opening in Spring 2016.
“At present the business plan is being redefined, costs recalculated and funding and staffing issues being appraised, which will all be completed this year.
“I am also receiving final quotes for the project which falls into three sections – surface treatment for the provision of the mini-gold, tank refurbishment and enhancement for the water park bumper boats and ancillary matters such as kiosk development, security fencing and infrastructure reconnections.”
The plans will turn the former water tank for the treatment works into a shallow boating bond, which will be used for water dodgems.
It is also set to be transformed into an ice skating rink in winter.
The mini-golf course will be built on surrounding land.
The waste water treatment plant closed several years ago and was replaced by a new site on the outskirts of the village.
Councillor Bill Lobban, who is a member of the Cairngorm planning committee, said: “It is a great idea. It is an eyesore as it stands.
“Mr Smith is trying to turn it into something better.”
