Residents have moved back into a Highland care home – nearly a year after they were forced to leave because of allegations of “poor practice”.
The Mackintosh Centre in Mallaig reopened its doors yesterday and celebrated with a huge party for its five returning residents.
Allegations of abuse emerged last year and police were brought in to investigate.
Three members of staff at the NHS Highland-run home were suspended and its then seven residents were moved to Invernevis House Care Home, in Fort William, early last month.
However no further police action was taken.
NHS Highland said that staff had to undergo further training before the centre, which is named after theatre impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh, could reopen.
However some relatives were forced to make round trips of more than 80 miles to visit loved ones while they stayed in the home in Fort William.
Melanie Meecham, primary care manager for the west area, said that a letter was sent to staff, residents and their families last month, informing them of the reopening.
She said: “It is a day of celebration for the Mackintosh Centre and we are very happy for everyone concerned
“NHS Highland and the MacKintosh Centre have improved practice within the care home; by improving the level of staffing, training and future planning before the residents were returned to their home.”
