An adventurer trying to fly across North America and the Atlantic in a gyrocopter hopes to land in the Western Isles later this week.
Norman Surplus from Northern Ireland had planned to fly his open cockpit aircraft to Stornoway in Lewis two weeks ago but was delayed by poor weather at Canada’s Baffin Island.
He left Oregon on June 1 but only got to Greenland at the end of last week, after flying across the Davis Strait, watching icebergs and polar bears.
Mr Surplus landed in Iceland a few days ago and hopes to reach Stornoway on Thursday.
He set out on his round the world trip in 2010, heading east from his home, and spent three years in Japan because the Russian authorities would not allow his gyrocopter into their airspace.
The 52-year-old, who is a coxswain for the RNLI, has crossed 22 countries during the entire trip and will make further stops in Scotland before heading home.
