One Highland student has celebrated attaining some of the best marks in the country – with six As at Higher, and all at the highest band.
Wick High School student, Joni Baikie got his results by e-mail while on holiday in Helsinki in Finland.
But the modest 17-year-old was taking it all in his stride yesterday.
Joni achieved his marks in English, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics and computing.
He now plans to study physics, maths and chemistry at Advanced Higher, and apply to study physics at St Andrews next year.
He will combine his sixth year studies with working at his father’s technology company in Wick.
Eventually he hopes to work in research in the field of physics.
Joni’s father is Professor Iain Baikie, who recently won the Swan Medal for his development of Kelvin Probe technology.
Joni said: “I was relaxed about getting my results. I was stressed before the exams but when they’re over, it’s done.
“I am very happy with my results, pleased and relieved. This is what I needed for university.”
The teenager said he was also pleased to show that it was possible to get high grades at a school in the far north, where it is often difficult to attract staff.
He added that he hoped other local youngsters would be inspired and encouraged by his success.
