Brave souls from Cairngorm Wilderness Contracts Ltd Engineering/Construction were the victim of an unholy swarm of midges this week.
The videos show the air thick with what seems like millions of Scotland’s apex predators.
Website, ‘The Midge Forecast’ uses midge catch data recorded using a network of biting midge traps and data submitted from midge-trap owners across the country, combined with weather forecast data from the MeteoGroup, to warn of midge threat levels across the land.
At the time the terrifying videos were taken, the threat level across the Cairngorms National Park stood at only 3 out of a possible 5.
Since it was first trialled in 2004, the forecasting system has proven to be as accurate as other established forecasts such sun and pollen indexes.
As the forecast uses historical midge catch data – which is continuously verified with catch and weather data from a network of midge-collection traps and Skye Instruments mini-weather stations, APS can forecast midge activity for any part of Scotland as far ahead as weather forecast data is available.
