A Western Isles heritage charity has won a £12,500 grant from a national retailer to help slash its power bills.
Comunn Eachdraidh Nis (CEN), on Lewis, was among 26 organisations to benefit from the M&S Energy Community Energy Fund.
The money will be invested in solar panels.
The winners were decided by a public ballot and CEN attracted more than 500 votes.
It will use the £12,500 to fund the installation of a 10kiloWatt, 40 solar panel system to help reduce its running costs and cuts its carbon footprint.
It carried out an energy audit in 2013 and completed a major insulation project last year with help from a grant from the Outer Hebrides Community Energy Fund. A more efficient heating system is currently being installed along with LED lighting.
A key role of CEN, which covers the area from the Butt of Lewis to Ballantrushal, is to create employment in one of Britain’s most remote areas.
During the summer it became one of the main employers in the area with eight people on its payroll.
CEN chairwoman Annie Macsween said: “We are thankful to M&S and those who voted for us. This funding will enable us to reduce our energy bills considerably.”
Jonathan Hazeldine, head of M&S Energy, said: “It was brilliant to see communities coming together in support of renewable energy projects in their area.”
