Charles Kennedy’s church in Lochaber has unveiled plans to install a stained glass window in memory of the former MP.
St John’s Church in Caol is hoping to raise between £8,000 and £10,000 to create the memorial.
More than 700 mourners gathered at St John’s in June for Mr Kennedy’s funeral, after the former Liberal Democrat leader died as a result of a haemorrhage.
His parents Ian and Mary Kennedy attended the church for more than 40 years, often playing the fiddle and organ there on a Saturday night.
In 2008, the couple were awarded a Benemerenti medal from Pope Benedict for services to the Catholic Church.
Reverend Roddy McAuley, the parish priest, revealed the plans for the memorial yesterday.
“In the church, opposite the alter, we have got a huge big triangular window which the sun always shines through on a Sunday, and I thought it would be beautiful to have it stained,” he said.
“I think it would be something very appropriate to have something in the memory of Charles, and also his parents.
“We are in the planning stage. The next thing is for the stained glass company to come up with designs.
“Donations for the project will be gratefully received and an account has been opened for people who wish to donate to the project.”
Artisan Stained Glass of Perth, associate members of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, have been commissioned to undertake the work.
A special window frame is being made by local carpenter Donald MacDonald.
Mr Kennedy died on June 1, just weeks after losing his Ross, Skye and Lochaber seat.
He had represented the Highlands at Westminster for 32 years.
His father had died just two months earlier, aged 88, while his mother died two years ago.
