A church facility on Stornoway has scooped a top award at a prize-giving ceremony in London.
The Shed at Martins Memorial Church was named Best Church Building Project in the Christian Forum Funders Awards.
Opened last year, the Shed is the base for all of the church’s youth and community services, offering Stornoway residents a versatile space where groups can meet.
Murdo Maciver, the Shed’s programme manager, was at the London ceremony to accept the award.
He said: “We are thankful for the nomination by The Joseph Rank Trust for best church building project in the annual Christian Funded Forum Awards and to the other 15 members of the forum for hosting such a great event.
“Being nominated was an incredible honour and when I met and heard about all the other amazing projects that are going on around the UK I just felt privileged to be amongst them.
“Being the Gold winner in our category was fantastic, humbling and great encouragement for us all in Martins Memorial Church that our work at the Shed has been recognised.
“What started as a vision many years ago is now a working building serving the Stornoway community. It is truly amazing that The Shed is now getting recognition nationally.
The Shed building includes a tuck shop café, pool table, flat screen television with video game console, band practice corner with a fully equipped recording sound desk, a flexible meeting area and a small room for quiet discussion.
Martins Memorial Church congregation raised one-third of the £250,000 cost of building the Shed and raised additional money from external funders.
A grant of £15,000 and a loan of £55,000 from the Church of Scotland General Trustees made up the balance.
David Robertson, secretary and clerk to the General Trustees, said: “The General Trustees are proud and delighted, but not entirely surprised, that The Shed has won this national award.
“The Shed is an example of a building transformed from a derelict husk into a vibrant community resource and a place where faith can flourish.”
