Tributes have been paid to a pensioner who died in a two-car crash in the Highlands.
Maurice Embley, from Lairg, was alone in his Skoda Octavia when it collided with a Renault Clio on the A836 near Invershin on Friday.
The accident happened at about 6.10pm.
The two occupants of the Renault Clio suffered minor injuries, and it is not believed they required hospital treatment.
Last night, the local community paid tribute to the popular retired cabinet maker and French polisher, who moved to the area with his wife Mavis a number of years ago.
Jeff Norrie, vice chairman of Lairg Community Council, said: “He was a well liked member of the community. It is a tragedy. His wife will be terribly upset, as are all of the community, because he was a very well liked character. He was full of fun and supported good causes in the village.
“Mrs Embley is a member of the local drama club and he was involved in the back stage activities of the drama club.”
Councillor Hugh Morrison of the North, West and Central Sutherland ward, said: “I came up through that road on Friday night. It was very wet and windy. There was a lot of surface water on the road but I don’t know that has been a factor in the crash.
“I pass on my condolences to the family involved. It is a tragedy. It is bad enough at any time of year but at this time of year being so close to Christmas it is heart breaking.”
Last night a police spokesman said: “Police can confirm that the man who died was 77-year-old Maurice Embley, from the Lairg area.
“Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either of these vehicles being driven on the road to come forward. Inquiries into the crash are ongoing and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Anyone with information about the collision should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
