Business leaders in the north are keeping a “watching brief” on the fallout from the Forth Bridge closure, as they try to gauge the economic impact on the Highlands and Islands’ economy.
Inverness Chamber of Commerce chief executive Stewart Nicol said: “There will be an inevitable impact on the Highland economy. It’s difficult to measure.
“We’ve obviously got a lot of hauliers in and around the Highlands. Edinburgh and the east of Scotland is an important market. It’s the capital city.
“It’s got an awful lot harder to get to from Inverness. Obviously, the Forth Road Bridge has a very significant and direct impact on the Fife economy but it will impact on ‘Scotland Plc’ and in the Highlands we’re not immune to that.
“There will be an impact on the additional traffic on the rail and bus routes. We’re keeping a watching brief on it with colleagues on the Scottish Chambers of Commerce.”
