The mother of famous Scottish stunt cyclist Danny MacAskill is going on her own adventure – driving 10,000 miles in an old van.
Anne MacAskill, 67, and her friend Kay Simpson, 69, are due to compete in the Mongol Rally in a two-decade-old Renault Express.
Mrs MacAskill who lives on Skye said her famous son had backed her venture.
More than 40 million people have viewed Danny’s famous The Ridge video, which shows him tackling Skye’s famous Cuillin Ridge on his bike.
“We have an agreement. I don’t worry about him and he does not worry about me,” said Mrs MacAskill.
“But he is delighted that I’m doing this. I’ve never done anything like it before.”
Mrs MacAskill runs the Colbost Folk Museum and the Giant MacAskill Museum on Skye, along with her husband Peter.
“I’m hoping he will sponsor me for a few pounds,” she said.
“It is more an adventure than a racing rally. My husband can’t quite believe I’m doing it after talking about it for the last two-and-a-half years. He thinks I’m mad. But I can’t wait to get going.
“Kay’s more the mechanic and we both enjoy driving, which is just as well. We plan to scrap the car at the end.”
The venture is in memory of Ms Simpson’s partner Duncan Strachan, who died almost three years ago.
“They had planned to go on the rally to celebrate their 70th birthdays so she wanted to do it in his memory. I couldn’t refuse,” added Mrs MacAskill.
“I hope to raise some money for two charities – Cancer Research UK and Wings for Life – and would be grateful for any support people can give.
“Wings for Life research foundation raises money for spinal cord injury research projects.
“My son has friends and colleagues who have suffered terrible spinal injuries. Also my mother had several neurosurgical operations on her back, plus three or four spinal fusions and lived – cheerfully, I have to say – with back pain for more than 50 years.
“Kay is raising money for Animal Asia to help stop bile bear farming.”
Kay, who is a former vet, will celebrate her birthday during the event which begins on July 16 and takes in England, France, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia.
Competitors have to finish by September 12.
