A woman was taken to hospital after her car skidded into a lorry on a Highland road amid icy conditions across much of the region yesterday.
The accident – one of several on north roads throughout the day – happened on the A833 near Culnakirk, between Kiltarlity and Drumnadrochit, at about 8.45am.
She has been described as being in a “stable condition” by an ambulance spokesman who said she was being taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.
The woman was rescued by firefighters before being passed into the care of ambulance staff.
The car came to rest in trees at the side of the road, with its front door having been removed to free the driver.
A police spokeswoman said that the accident had caused debris to be spread over the road, including fuel which had to be cleared up by a council roads team. A spokeswoman for the fire service said that crews from Beauly and Inverness, as well as a specialist heavy rescue unit had attended and used cutting equipment and spreaders to help the woman from the vehicle.
Meanwhile on the Black Isle, a driver had a lucky escape after crashed off the B9163 on the Cromarty side of Jemimaville and ended up on the shoreline several feet below the road.
A police spokeswoman said nobody had been injured in the incident.
The white Fiat Panda could be seen yesterday beneath an embankment close to the high water mark on the beach next to the Cromarty Firth.
Last night police attended two separate accidents on the A9 Inverness to Thurso road at The Cromarty Bridge and on the A96 near the junction to Balloch.
Nobody was injured in either incident but both caused delays having happened during the afternoon rush hour.
The Met Office has issued a yellow “be aware” weather warning for ice into this morning.
The agency has warned of potentially difficult driving conditions on untreated surfaces during the current cold snap.
The warning covers the bulk of the Highlands, although western and northern coastal areas as well as the western and northern isles are not included.
A spokeswoman for the Met Office said: “It’s going to remain cold throughout Thursday but it will be pretty settled for most and bright in many places.
“There will be a little hill snow but nothing likely to cause much disruption.
“It will be all change again on Friday with snow on higher ground down to about 200m (660ft) and wintry weather weather across the area.
“That’s how it is likely to stay into the weekend, remaining cold and fairly unsettled.”
