A major north road was blocked last night after a crash involving a tanker.
The lorry appeared to have struck the rocks on the side of the A82 Inverness to Fort William road, causing major damage along the passenger side of the vehicle and down the tank.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the crash, three miles south-west of Urquhart Castle, at about 6pm.
Firefighters from Drumnadrochit disabled the tanker’s batteries and made the vehicle safe, and also used an environmental kit to clean up a diesel spill from the tanker.
The driver is not believed to have been seriously hurt, and was seen walking around.
Police in the meantime were turning waiting drivers back, as the busy tourist route was expected to be closed well into the evening.
It is understood the tanker was transporting waste water from Fort William.
Just an hour later, emergency services were called to a second crash at Cromarty Bridge.
Three people were injured in the two-car crash happened on the south side of the bridge, near the junction with the B9163 road to Conon Bridge.
Two fire crews from Dingwall attended, but nobody in either of the vehicles involved – a white Range Rover and red Vauxhall Corsa – needed freed from the wreckage.
The tanker accident happened near the spot where a motorcyclist was killed at the weekend.
Gordon Blair, from Staffordshire, collided with two other vehicles on the A82 between Drumnadrochit and Urquhart Castle on Saturday. The 73-year-old died at the scene.
Nobody else involved was seriously injured.
A police spokeswoman yesterday said Mr Blair’s family was “understandably devastated by their loss”.
The accident happened at about 4.20pm on Saturday, with the Inverness to Fort William road remaining closed for several hours while an investigation was carried out.
