Almost four square miles of heath has been destroyed by fire at Morar, near Mallaig in Lochaber.
The fire service received a report of a small grass fire soon after 5pm on Thursday and an appliance from Strontian attended at the scene.
A spokesman for the service said: “The crew called for extra manpower because the fire was spreading.”
They were initially joined by a crew from Fort William, with further units from Mallaig and Spean Bridge called in as the blaze took hold.
The spokesman said: “The fire broke up into three sectors and a sector commander was put in charge of each of them.”
He added that firefighters used knapsack tanks and beaters to extinguish the blaze, which was out soon after 7.15pm, but the Mallaig crew stayed at the scene until 7.40pm to make sure it did not reignite.
No one was hurt in the blaze and no properties were damaged or threatened by it.
