Smithton Primary School was awarded first place in the 2016 Safer Highland J Rock™ competition with their performance ‘Decisions, Decisions!’.
Smithton’s piece explored the question ‘Is it acceptable to exploit nature for personal gain?’ through a tale about the Loch Ness Monster being captured by a fisherman.
In second place were Bridgend Primary School who performed ‘Silence Is Golden!’.
Third place was presented to Melvich Primary School for their piece ‘Cailleach Corca’.
The event, held at the Eden Court Theatre, attracted a large audience and was supported by Safer Highland Partnership and Choices for Life.
Police Scotland, Chief Superintendent Julian Innes attended the event and presented second place, he said “I thought it was brilliant, the young people never fail to amaze me with the talent that they have. I was never good at any of that sort of stuff at school, so to see so many young people, particularly boys, getting involved in the performances is fantastic and I think Smithton was a worthy winner tonight.”
Scott Hay, Highland Senior Officer for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service commented; “We are fully supportive of this excellent initiative, which gives young people the confidence to express themselves. That confidence can have a positive impact on their personal development, allowing them to make the best possible life choices.”
Deborah Stewart, Coordinator of Highland Alcohol & Drugs Partnership said; “J Rock and Rock Challenge forms an important part of our prevention strategy. Feedback from previous events has shown that participating helps to avoid, delay and reduce drug and alcohol use among young people”.
