A campaign trailer for Ruth Davidson was issued with a parking ticket in Oban yesterday.
The Scottish Conservative leader had been due to visit the town as part of her campaign trail, however the weather proved too windy for the helicopter to take her to Oban from Keith.
Some of her supporters had been looking forward to meeting up with her in the Argyll town.
A car towing a trailer with the banner reading “Ruth Davidson for a Strong Opposition” was issued with a parking ticket on Corran Esplanade during the afternoon.
The car was owned by Bill Hanbury, President of the Argyll and Bute Scottish Conservative and Unionist Association.
Mr Hanbury said: “I displayed a ticket in the car and put one on the trailer. I came back to the car and found the ticket had been ripped off the trailer. I bought another one and put it on the trailer and when I came back it had gone again and I had a parking ticket.
“I was a bit irritated. I don’t know who removed the ticket. We are just going to pay it, it’s too much trouble.”
A local man photographed the trailer being issued with the ticket.
Norman Martin, a retired CalMac ferry captain and a Nicola Sturgeon supporter, said: “I thought to myself, it’s one law for us and one for them. If you want to be a legislator, you should obey the rules. Says the man who has never had a parking ticket. I will probably get one next week now.”
Donald Cameron, Scottish Conservative candidate for Argyll and Bute, said: “He had put a ticket on the trailer and it was ripped off. It is very unfortunate. Mr Hanbury is an upstanding member of the community.”
A spokesman for Argyll and Bute Council said: “It would not be appropriate to comment an individual case, however, should any motorist feel they have received a penalty charge notice (PCN) unfairly there is a statutory appeals process in place, details of which is available on the back of the PCN and on the council’s website, which can ultimately be decided by an independent adjudicator.
“Our wardens apply the rules with common sense, acting in a professional and responsible manner at all times, following national parking guidelines.”
