NHS Highland is asking woman with epilepsy who are thinking of starting a family to get in touch and help raise awareness about the condition during National Epilepsy Week this week.
About 400 women in Scotland with the condition give birth every year and the hope is to ensure women of child-bearing potential seek pre-pregnancy counselling to ensure their antiepileptic drug treatment is rationalised to prevent congenital abnormalities.
Staff can also advise pregnant women with epilepsy to stop smoking as they have a higher risk of premature contractions, pre-term labour and delivery compared to women who do not smoke.
