Mountain rescuers were left surprised after being called to an unusual job – to dig out a horse stuck in a Highland bog.
Members of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team had just returned from carrying an injured walker off Ben Nevis when they were called to Loch Arkaig to help free the stranded horse.
Team leader John Stevenson said the fire service were unable to deal with the incident. Fort William coastguard rescue team were also sent after the call out around 9.45pm on Tuesday.
“We had just stretchered a 19-year-old woman with a broken ankle 1000 feet down Ben Nevis when the police asked us to dig out a horse in a bog,” he said.
“It was to say the least an unusual request for a mountain rescue team.
“But we set off and just as we reached Loch Arkaig, which is not the easiest place to reach, we had the message that the horse had been dug out successfully.
“So we had to drive all the way back – it was a long night.”
