Tensions between two groups in a north pub led to an assault in the street outside.
Kyle Mackenzie, 19, admitted assaulting Steven Reid in Olrig Street, Thurso, on November 7.
Mackenzie, an apprentice machinist, butted him and then kneed him on the body, Wick Sheriff Court was told yesterday.
Solicitor Laim McAllister described it as “a moment of complete madness and stupidity”, by the accused who was mild-mannered by nature and a first offender.
The assault was alleged to have been sparked by a remark which passed between two members of the opposing groups.
Mackenzie, of 6 Dunnotter Road, Ellon, was fined £300. He had been visiting friends in Thurso at the time of the incident.
