Almost £15,000 has been raised in just a day to help repatriate the body of an Australian hotel worker who was hit by a car on the isle of Skye.
An appeal was launched to help cover the costs of bringing the body of Madison Rice, 21, back to her homeland.
She had been enjoying a day off work with her boyfriend Joe Perry, when the tragedy happened in the early hours of Monday morning near the Sligachan Hotel.
The couple were believed to be returning home to the luxury Kinloch Lodge hotel in Sleat, where they had been living and working.
Her family in Queensland said they were “overwhelmed” by the support.
In a statement they said: “We are all struggling to come to terms with this news of our young lady being taken away from us all so soon.
“The family of Maddy Rice are overwhelmed and would like to thank the community here and overseas. The response to our donation page was to help raise maybe part of the funds necessary to get her home and we’d find the money somewhere to make the rest. “The community have been amazingly supportive to us during this time. We can’t say thank you enough, but that doesn’t seem enough.”
Several of the more than 500 donations were from people on Skye, including Ms Rice’s employers at the Kinloch Lodge, who pledged more than £1,000 to the campaign to return her body.
The family launched the campaign on the “YouCaring” compassionate crowdfunding page after it emerged that she had no travel insurance.
One message on the website said: “With sympathy and prayers from Skye.”
Another read: “We are all so sorry for your loss. Isle of Skye.”
The family statement added: “We are so very grateful to the community for the love and support that we have been shown on Maddy’s Facebook page and posts and comments all over Facebook.
“We have reached our goal to enable us to get her home and we will let everyone know when we can celebrate her life together.
“Her mother Kerry, her step-father Alix, her father Stephen and his fiancé Carol and her twin brother Harlan would like to personally extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped so much.
“Words cannot express enough of our gratitude.”
