Newly elected SNP MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, Gail Ross has said she will not stand down as a councillor for Wick.
Ms Ross said that in these times of political uncertainty, she does not want to place extra burdens on Highland Council by standing down and creating a by election.
She said: “Given the fallout and uncertainty caused by the EU referendum vote I have decided to stay on as councillor. As it stands there is a genuine possibility of a General Election in the near future.
“As a result of the leave vote (which was neither voted for in the Highlands nor Scotland) Highland Council stands to lose out on more than £100 million worth of European Union funding. Therefore I do not want to cause further burdens on an already under pressure Highland Council by forcing a by election especially with the threat of a possible General Election looming. My council salary will be put to local good causes.”
