Five people have been taken to hospital this afternoon following an accident on the A9 Inverness to Thurso road in Caithness.
A police spokeswoman said the road remained closed in both directions following the two-car crash, which happened just south of the junction with the A99 Latheron to Wick road just after midday.
Police, along with three road ambulances, an air ambulance and two fire appliances – one each from Wick and Dunbeath – attended the incident.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “Five patients were treated at the scene.
“One was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance in a stable condition and another was taken to Raigmore by road ambulance – also in a stable condition.
“The other three, who were walking wounded patients, were taken to Caithness General Hospital in Wick by ambulance for a check up.”
He was unable to say whether the casualties were male or female.
Motorists are being advised to use an alternative route and expect longer than normal journey times.
