Two people were cut free from the wreckage of a car following a crash which closed the A9 Inverness to Thurso road in Caithness for around four hours this afternoon.
The pair and three other people were taken to hospital after the accident, which happened just south of the junction with the A99 Latheron to Wick road shortly after midday.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that the road had now reopened.
Police, along with three road ambulances, an air ambulance and two fire appliances – one each from Wick and Dunbeath – attended the incident.
A fire service spokeswoman said firefighters freed two people from the wreckage of one of the cars using cutting equipment, then administered first aid and oxygen to the pair.
Crews then remained at the location to make the scene safe.
An ambulance service spokesman said: “Five patients were treated at the scene.
“One was flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness by air ambulance in a stable condition and another was taken to Raigmore by road ambulance – also in a stable condition.
“The other three, who were considered to be walking wounded, were taken to Caithness General Hospital in Wick by ambulance for a check up.”
He was unable to say whether the casualties were male or female.
