The World Caber Championships will take place at Inveraray Highland Games in the grounds of the home of the Duke of Argyll next week.
It will be the eighth year running that the games have hosted the prestigious event, which attracts the highest calibre of athletes from all over the world – from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Germany, Poland and other parts of Europe, not forgetting the home grown talent.
The Games take place on Tuesday July 19 and the winner is presented with the Scottish Games Association medal.
It is a true test of skill and physical prowess as the caber at the World Championships is one of the biggest, if not the biggest on the circuit, measuring more than 20 feet tall and weighing in at more than 140lbs.
The title is currently jointly held by two men from England and Poland. Last year Scott Ryder and Sebastian Wenta demonstrated extreme skill by throwing the heavy caber in such a way that it landed at exactly 12 o’clock, which is perfection in a caber competition.
With the beautiful location at the head of Loch Fyne, the Inveraray Highland Games are held in the grounds of Inveraray Castle, where they are opened by the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell.
Vibrant and friendly, these traditional highland games offer an exciting and memorable day out for all the family, with impressive athletes, great food and drink, souvenir shopping, side shows and a children’s activity tent.
There will be a falconry display by KG Hawks and contingents from 4 Scots and 7 Scots will be in attendance.
Jane Young, Inveraray Castle manager, said: “The Games celebrate our rich Highland culture and the one-day event showcases all the traditional Highland Games, harking back to the warrior clan days.
“There is the usual mix of track and ‘heavy’ events, for the sports-minded, and both Scottish Highland dancing and solo piping for those with a more artistic bent.
“Inveraray Highland Games are also delighted that Loch Fyne Oysters and Clan Campbell Scotch Whisky continue to support the Games as main sponsors.”
The Inveraray and District Pipe Band will parade through the town at 10.45am with the main events commencing shortly afterwards.
