A spectacular north estate which was the subject of a book about life in the Highlands has been put up for sale.
Glentruim House and Cottages, near Laggan, is available for offers in excess of £3million.
The history of the house is bound up with the fortunes of Clan Macpherson, and was the subject of ‘A strange and Wild Place’ by Sandra Macpherson, an account of her family’s time at Glentruim.
The sale includes the B-listed, eight-bedroom Glentruim House as well as three cottages, a wedding chapel and an estate office.
The property has been comprehensively restored and refurbished by current owners Gordon and Sydney Ingram, who use Glentruim as a holiday home and for exclusive use functions.
The Ingrams bought the property in 2008 and have since added a smoking room, library, beauty spa, sauna, gym, games room and home cinema to the main house, as well as a biomass heating system.
They opened the property for functions and holiday lets 18 months ago and have subsequently seen a high level of holiday bookings and weddings.
The new owners could choose to run it in a similar fashion, develop it into a hotel or return it to a private home with the option to continue the holiday lets.
Mr Ingram said: “My childhood holidays were spent in the Highlands and I wanted my wife, and then my children, to have the same connection to Scotland.
“We used to have a holiday house near Kingussie but then we came across Glentruim which we thought was amazing.
“We lived with it for a bit before first working on the cottages and then taking 15 months to renovate the house.
“We started every room from scratch – many of the timber lintels were rotten through – and turned it into a very comfortable home. “We have taken great care to blend traditional details with contemporary comfort and luxury.”
Kevin Maley, partner in Strutt and Parker’s Inverness office, said: “Glentruim is a superb house in a glorious location which has been stunningly restored by the current owners. It offers a wonderful home for a private buyer but equally presents flexible commercial opportunities.”
