A man in his 70s is in a critical condition in hospital after a “disturbance” in a Lochaber village last night.
It is understood that a weapon was involved.
A woman in her 60s was also taken to hospital after the incident in the Fort William area.
And a 49-year old man is currently being detained by police while house-to-house inquiries are carried out in the area.
A police spokeswoman said: “Around 8.30pm last night, emergency services attended an address at Glenkingie Street in the Caol area of Fort William following a report of a disturbance.
“A 49-year-old man has been detained in connection with the incident and inquiries are ongoing at this time.
“A man in his 70s has been transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary in a critical, but stable condition and a woman in her 60s was released from Belford Hospital following treatment.”
She added that officers would be carrying out house-to house inquiries in Caol today.
And she thanked local people for their patience and understanding while the matter was being dealt with by officers.
