A Ross-shire man who drove at almost twice the speed limit avoided a jail sentence at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.
Police recorded Simon Ebrihem’s speed at 137mph on the A9 dual carriageway at Arpafeelie, near Tore, on June 16.
When police stopped the 37-year-old’s Volkswagen, officers breathalysed Ebrihem and found he had more than three times the permitted level of alcohol in his system.
Sentence had been deferred for reports on Ebrihem who admitted driving dangerously on the A9 on June 18 at 137mph and with excess alcohol. He also admitted a previous drink driving conviction.
Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said Ebrihem, of 55 Highfield Circle, Muir of Ord, had received a call from a female friend in Inverness who had been threatened by a man in her home.
“There was nothing amiss about the driving other than the speed,” said Mr Dickson.
Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood disqualified Ebrihem for four years and ordered him to carry out 160 hours of unpaid community work.
He will also have to resit the extended driving test.
