The 80th anniversary of the world’s only tidal airport will be officially celebrated today.
Barra Airport opened in August 1936 with a timetable of regular flights to Glasgow.
It is the only place on the planet where scheduled flights land and take off from a beach.
The mile-long strip – with three landings – is flooded by the sea twice a day, so aircraft have to time their flights in conjunction with the tide.
Complications can also occur depending on the direction of the wind.
Exclusive screenings of the 2016 film Whisky Galore will be shown with free entry for locals.
The original Ealing comedy was based on a novel written on Barra by Scottish author, Compton MacKenzie, after whisky-starved Barra dwellers liberated the cargo off the SS Politician which hit a reef near the island in 1941.
Screenings are at 6pm and 8pm at the airport.
New transport minister, Humza Yousaf, hopes to mark the milestone by flying to the island today.
He will miss the film as his return flight leaves before the sea races back in to cover the beach in the afternoon.
The stunning approach to the airstrip is consistently voted one of the world’s most scenic landings in regular polls by private jet booking service, Private Fly.
