A landslide in Lochaber caused disruption to train passengers and motorists last night – and further problems are expected today.
One evening rail service between Crianlarich and Mallaig was forced to terminate at Fort William, due to a landslip, caused by heavy rain, which blocked the line between Lochailort and Arienskill.
A replacement bus service was laid on by Scotrail to convey passengers between Fort William and Mallaig, following the incident, which happened at about 6pm. No one was believed to be hurt as a result of the incident.
A statement on the Scotrail website said that disruption was expected on the affected line until early this afternoon.
The adjacent A830 road to the isles, a popular route with tourists, was also blocked as a result of the landslide.
Caol and Mallaig councillor Bill Clark said: “This certainly affects a lot of local people as well as tourists.
“It is a very popular road. That’s the road to the isles and it is very, very well used. I certainly hope that they do get it cleared up as quickly as possible”.
Police confirmed last night that the road would be closed until further notice.
An earlier afternoon train between Mallaig and Glasgow Queen Street was also delayed due to flooding.
