Seven people have been taken to hospital after a vehicle caught fire following a three-car crash on the north’s busiest road.

Emergency services were sent to the scene at around 2.05pm yesterday after a cars including a red Seat Ibiza and a maroon Nissan Qashqai collided.

When they arrived at the Munlochy junction of the Inverness to Thurso road they found the Seat alight, but all occupants had managed to escape the vehicle safely.

Firefighters who attended the crash managed to extinguish the fire and paramedics took seven people from the vehicles to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

None are believed to have been seriously injured and were all out of their cars by the time the emergency services arrived.

The road was partially blocked southbound for around two hours after the incident as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

The northbound lane of the dual carriageway section of the road remained open throughout.

Firefighters from Inverness and Dingwall attended at the scene and used hose reel jets and breathing equipment to extinguish the fire.

The Seat hatchback ended up completely off the road with significant damage to its front end.

The same stretch of the road prompted a police warning earlier this year after a total of 18 cars were involved in crashes across two successive mornings in February.

The first day six cars were involved in a pile-up to the north of Munlochy junction. Two minutes later another car caught fire after colliding with a vehicle and ending up in a ditch.

The following day six cars were involved in a crash at the junction, while four more collided in the resulting queue.

Police at the time blamed low sun as a “contributory factor” in the series of accidents.
