Motorists on the north’s busiest road faced major delays because of two sets of roadworks within a few miles.
Drivers faced tailbacks of several miles in both directions at Dalwhinnie on the A9 Inverness-Perth route.
Roads agency Bear Scotland said last night it would suspend one set of works to replace a bridge parapet at Dalwhinnie in order to remove temporary traffic lights in the area.
It is also carrying out resurfacing at Dalnaspidal between Drumochter and Dalwhinnie, with motorists getting through under convoy.
A spokeswoman for Bear said last night that the agency was reviewing practices on-site in order to allow traffic to clear.
She said: “We currently have two sets of improvement works ongoing on the A9 between Drumochter and Dalwhinnie, resurfacing improvements at Dalnaspidal and the replacement of a bridge parapet at Dalwhinnie.
“For the safety of the workforce and motorists traffic management at both sites has been in use but has resulted in delays to motorists.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that we minimise disruption to road users during the remainder of these works, including temporarily suspending the bridge works at Dalwhinnie with a view to removing the traffic lights tomorrow.
“At Dalnaspidal we are limiting our convoy working where possible to reduce build-up of traffic and reviewing our queue monitoring practice for the remainder of the works, including manually operating the temporary traffic lights to allow longer queues to pass.
“We thank motorists for their patience during these essential improvements to the A9 and would ask them to plan their journeys in advance and allowing for extra journey time.”
The 0.8-mile Dalnaspidal work is part of a £335,000 project to resurface the road in the area.
Work started on Monday, September 21 and is due to be completed by Friday, October 9.
