Dentist suspended for carrying out root canal treatment when it wasn’t needed

A Highland dentist who was suspended for carrying out a root canal treatment that was not needed will face a conduct review hearing later this month.

Violeta Prodanova was suspended for eight months by the General Dental Council (GDC) in connection with her work at ADC Golspie Dental Practice between March and November 2012.

She will now face the GDC’s professional conduct committee in London on November 19, and the panel will review her progress.

Ms Prodanova carried out a root canal treatment and crown preparation on a patient, identified only as Patient A in the GDC’s reports.

She started the process in May 2012 despite not taking account of the patient’s medical history or symptoms.

She admitted not taking radiographs of any “diagnostic value” following the completion of the root canal and “without clinical justification”.

In October 2012 the patient returned to the practice complaining of pain and sensitivity.

Ms Prodanova admitted not carrying or recording any investigation into the cause of the pain and prescribed antibiotics when it was not “clinically indicated”.

Patient A again returned to the practice in November 2012 and Ms Prodanova carried out another radiograph scan.

However, she then backdated the scan from its actual date to June 6, 2012.

In its findings, the GDC said her conduct was misleading, intended to mislead and dishonest.

The dentist admitted the majority of the charges against her, while others were found to have been proved at the GDC hearing.

Ms Prodanova admitted to the GDC that she did not “do a good job” while working at the practice and said she was “embarrassed and ashamed” about changing dates on the treatment records.

The hearing was told that she had not undertaken any clinical work since March 2013 after resigning from the practice.

Ms Prodanova had only made “limited progress” in a development plan aimed at addressing her failings.

This was partly put down to injuries sustained in a serious road accident when she was hit by a van while cycling in the village.

Yesterday, Ms Prodanova declined to comment.
