Widespread disruption is expected for travel today as gale force winds are forecast to batter the north.
The Met Office have issued a yellow “be aware” weather warning covering the whole of Scotland for high winds between midday today and 7am tomorrow morning.
The strongest winds are due to hit the Western Isles and the far north-west mainland with gusts reaching up to 80mph.
Ferry operator CalMac have put the majority of its services on amber alert ahead of the forecast bad weather.
The alerts mean that affected services are liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice, depending on the weather.
As of last night, the only Hebridean service not on amber alert was the South Uist service between Mallaig and Lochboisdale.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “A depression is expected to deepen and move towards Iceland during Friday, with the associated frontal zone expected to affect the UK throughout Friday and Saturday.
“Southwesterly winds will gust 45-55 mph quite widely across Scotland and Northern Ireland, locally to more than 60mph. In the Western Isles and far northwest mainland Scotland gusts will reach around 70-80mph.
“There is some uncertainty in the inland extent of the strongest winds so this warning will be kept under review and updated as necessary.
“Be aware that some low level disruption looks likely.”
