A woman has died in a road accident in Ross-shire.
The 63-year-old died at the scene of the crash on the A835 just west of the Maryburgh roundabout on the Inverness to Ullapool road.
The victim, who has not yet been named, was a passenger in an Audi A8 which was involved in a collision with a Toyota Auris at around 10.30pm on Tuesday.
The 66-year-old male driver of the Audi and the make driver of the Toyota were both taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, suffering from what police described as “multiple injuries”.
These are not believed to be life-threatening.
The road was closed for several hours as road policing officers carried out a thorough investigation at the scene.
Police have now appealed for witnesses of the accident to come forward to help with the investigation.
The accident is the second tragedy on the north’s roads this week, with both affecting Ross-shire.
The accident at Maryburgh follows closely after the death of Noel Gilbert in the early hours of Monday morning on the A9 south of Dornoch.
The 40-year-old lived in Inverness but had strong connections with Dingwall, running the Gilbert Motors garage in the town.
He was walking on the Inverness to Thurso road when he was involved in a collision with a van.
After the Maryburgh accident, Councillor Margaret Paterson, Dingwall and Seaforth, said: “It’s another tragedy and it’s very sad.
“There’s not a lot you can say at times like this because you wish that things like this didn’t happen at all.
“A whole family has to cope with the loss of a loved one.
“All I can do is offer my condolences to them. My thoughts and prayers are very much with them.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Police can confirm that following a two car collision on the A835 near Maryburgh, Ross-shire, sadly a 63 year-old woman died at the scene and two men were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with multiple injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.”
She added: “The road was closed until around 7.15am this morning (Wednesday) to allow an investigation to take place.
“Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to make contact via 101.”
