Movie lovers were last night celebrating the “Absolutely Fabulous” news that a popular pensioners’ film club in Inverness will be back in business this month.
The subsidised weekly treat for senior citizens, which had included coffee and biscuits, was recently withdrawn by the venue’s owners Vue, sparking an outcry from regular customers across the region.
It has decided to reinstate the “senior screenings” service in the Highland capital along with those in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hamilton and Livingston “by popular demand”.
The company did not explain last month why the Inverness club was to be scrapped.
Speaking yesterday, Barry Laird, general manager at Vue Inverness, said: “We’re pleased to reintroduce the screenings following continued high demand. We’re looking forward to welcoming familiar and new faces back to the showings.
“Our senior screenings not only provide our senior customers with the chance to enjoy the big screen with a cuppa but also to socialise with others in the community.”
The tea and film for £3.99 service for the over 60s resumes at 1pm on September 15 with “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
On the following Thursdays, blockbusters will include The Jungle Book, Me Before You and Absolutely Fabulous.
Audrey Cumming, 79, from Kingussie, said: “That is absolutely fabulous because it’s been such a miss.
“I had been really miffed when he previously heard that they were restoring it elsewhere but not Inverness, so this is wonderful news.”
Alice Morrison, 81, from Inverness, said: “I’m delighted because we’ll be back to meeting the people we’ve met there and we’ll be seeing the films. It’s nice to know that people listened to what we were saying.”
