An Inverness dentist is to face a review hearing after being found to have failed to wash his hands and decontaminate equipment.
Andre Basson was initially suspended from practicing by the General Dental Council (GDC) for six months.
He was allowed to return to the profession in September last year with conditions.
The South African-born dentist will face the GDC again later this week where a panel will review this position.
Mr Basson’s original suspension related to charges regarding his work at The Keep Dental Practice in Castle Wynd between April 2009 and March 2014.
Failings included basic infection controls such as washing his hands when required or wearing gloves and other protective equipment.
The GDC also heard that Mr Basson used pieces of dental kit more than once when he should have thrown them out and failed to decontaminate other pieces of equipment between patients.
The conditions he has been working under involved working with a postgraduate dental director on a personal development plan to ensure adequate practice management and infection control in his practice.
Mr Basson has also had to work with a supervisor and must also commission and fund personal audits on his clinical practice, to be submitted every three months to the GDC
An immediate condition order has also been imposed to ensure he notifies any commissioning body on whose dental performance list he is on or seeks to be on, as well as NHS Highland.
The committee which considered Mr Basson’s case in September last year heard that it was common ground between the GDC and the dentist that his “fitness to practice” remained impaired.
A representative of Mr Basson said that it was felt that he needed more time to work on his remediation.
The committee also heard from the practice manager at The Keep who said that there had been a “positive change” in Mr Basson as a result of his period of suspension.
The review hearing will be held in London on Friday.
