Road gritting in Inverness can start an hour earlier than usual – at 5am – under a new regime agreed yesterday by city councillors.
The 205 miles of primary routes (31%) are treated first followed by 178 miles of secondary routes.
Crews will treat the council’s other routes “as resources permit, and primary and secondary route treatments are completed”.
The average amount of salt used in Inverness each year is 10,000 tonnes. The council has 60,000 tonnes in stock throughout Highland and “no concerns” about salt supplies.
People can apply for grit bins and community self-help under the council’s “winter resilience aid” programme.
