A woman was taken to hospital by ambulance yesterday after falling into the icy waters of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness.
Paramedics, police and fire service personnel rushed to the scene in the morning after receiving a call to say that a woman was in the water.
The incident happened shortly after 9.30am near the Tomnahurich Bridge, which carries the A82 road to Fort William.
It is understood that the woman had managed to get herself out of the canal without any assistance, but that she did require medical treatment.
She was assessed by paramedics before being taken by ambulance to the city’s Raigmore Hospital.
Her condition was not known last night – however it was not thought to be life-threatening.
It is understood that the incident was not related to the bad weather and high winds experienced in the Highland capital yesterday.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service said that two teams of paramedics had arrived at the scene within a few minutes of receiving a report about the incident yesterday.
She said: “We received a call at 9.47am about a person in the water.
“At this point our information was limited, but it was then confirmed that person was now out of the water and required medical help.
“Within seven minutes, two ambulance crews were at the scene.
“The patient was assessed by our crew members and taken into Raigmore Hospital for further treatment.”
A police spokeswoman said that officers had also attended the scene and were to take witness statements.
“She came out of the water and was treated by paramedics,” she added.
