A pre-planning application has been lodged for a new £66million jail next to the biggest retail park in Inverness.
Scottish Prison Service (SPS) bosses confirmed earlier this month that they had concluded a deal to build the facility behind Homebase at the south-west end of Inverness Shopping Park.
The switch to the site in the West Seafield area of the Highland capital follows a vocal community campaign against ill-fated proposals to locate it at Milton of Leys.
The proposal of application notice lodged last week means the SPS has 12 weeks to consult the community before submitting detailed plans.
Inverness South councillor Ken Gowans, who fought against the Milton of Leys application, said: “It’s great to see that it’s now going forward to the new site.
“I think it’s the ideal site for this and it will hopefully go through without any problems.”
